Environmental Sustainability Action Plan

The UGDSB Environmental Sustainability Action Plan (2014-2019) will ensure students are prepared to take their place as informed, engaged, and empowered citizens who will be pivotal in shaping the future of our province, our country and our global environment.

The Environmental Sustainability Action Plan has four pillars:

  1. Learning and Teaching – Expand students’ knowledge, skills, and practices and enhance critical thinking skills in order to be environmentally responsible citizens.
  2. Staff and Student Engagement – Participate actively in practising and promoting environmental stewardship.
  3. Environmental Leadership – Environmental Education is integrated into school board policies, procedures, and strategic plans.
  4. Community Connections and Partnerships – Extend engagement in environmental education to the broader community.

Drinking Water Systems

There are 14 schools in our district that get their drinking water from wells. All of our other schools are on municipal water systems. In accordance with Ontario’s Drinking Water Systems Regulation (Ontario Regulation 170/03), Upper Grand’s annual reports on drink water systems are available online.

Green Energy Act Reports

Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan

In 2011, Ontario Regulation 397/11 made under the Green Energy Act came into effect. This legislation outlines that all public agencies, including school boards “shall prepare, publish, make available to the public and implement Energy Conservation and Demand Management plans”. The Upper Grand District School Board is strongly committed to continue to support leadership in the development of knowledge, skills, perspectives, and practices in order to foster environmentally responsible citizens. In addition, the board is dedicated to expand current energy conservation initiatives by developing strategies to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to incorporate these values into students’ educational programs.

Energy Conservation and Demand Management plans require school boards to report on their energy consumption and set targets for reduction. The energy plan is composed of two parts as follows:

  1. A summary of the public agency’s annual energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for its operations.
  2. A description of previous, current and proposed measures for conserving and otherwise reducing the amount of energy consumed by the public agency’s operations and for managing the public agency’s demand for energy, including a forecast of the expected results of current and proposed measures.

Annual Energy Consumption

Under the Ministry of Energy’s Green Energy Act (GEA), Ontario Regulation 397-11, broader public sector organizations, such as school boards, are required to report annually on the energy consumption of their sites through an annual GEA report. The first submission was due on July 1, 2013 for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

Each board is required to report on the energy use by all facilities currently in-use by the board. The use of electricity, natural gas and heating oil for each building is identified in the report below. The report has been generated using the Ministry of Energy’s reporting template.

As part of Ontario Regulation 397-11, Boards are required to submit their completed report to the Ministry of Energy, post the consumption data for all their sites on both their internet and intranet sites, and provide a hard copy at their Head Office to any interested member of the public. Water Testing for Lead

As required by Ontario Regulation 243/07, Schools, Private Schools and Day Nurseries are required to carry out annual sampling and testing for lead. Records of flushing and testing for the previous six years are available online.
